Khao Sok National Park shelters 160 million years of unbroken rainforest — older than the Amazon itself. The 739-square-kilometre protected zone in Surat Thani province contains the world's oldest evergreen canopy, a limestone karst geology that predates the Jurassic, and more than 300 bird species.
Trails wind through dipterocarp groves where Rafflesia kerrii blooms reach nearly a metre in diameter, and gibbons call from canopies that tower 60 metres overhead.

Khao Sok's ecosystem has survived logging pressure that cleared 90 per cent of Thailand's lowland rainforest by the 1980s. The park gained protected status in 1980, absorbing former hunting grounds and rubber plantations. Today, ranger stations enforce strict no-litter policies, and trail fees contribute directly to habitat restoration. The jungle trek infrastructure remains deliberately minimal — no paved paths, no permanent structures beyond bamboo rest shelters, and no motorised transport within the core zone.
