Khao Sok National Park protects 738 square kilometres of lowland rainforest that predates the Amazon by 160 million years. The forest survived the Pleistocene ice ages when much of Southeast Asia turned to savanna.
Today the park anchors the larger Khao Sok–Phang Nga forest complex, a UNESCO-recognised biodiversity corridor connecting the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand. The limestone massifs that tower above the canopy are remnants of a Permian coral reef, uplifted when the Indian subcontinent collided with Eurasia 50 million years ago.

The Sok River bamboo rafts are hand-lashed by Karen and Thai guides who learned the technique from their grandfathers. Cheow Lan Lake tours typically include a stop at Pakarang Cave or Nam Talu Cave, where limestone passages hold Paleolithic rock art and swiftlet nests harvested under royal concession. The park's 300 baht conservation fee funds ranger patrols and wildlife corridors; revenue has doubled since 2020 as domestic ecotourism replaced beach holidays.
